Lithuania prepares for its Presidency of the Council of the EU: health agenda discussed in Brussels
As Lithuania prepares to take on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), Minister of Health Linas Kukuraitis and Vice-Minister Daniel Naumovas are visiting Brussels from 27 to 30 September. During the visit, they met with members of the European Commission and the European Parliament, Lithuania’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU, Robertas Bružila, and the health attaché team at the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health delegation began its visit in Brussels at Lithuania’s Permanent Representation to the EU. Together with the health attaché team, they discussed Lithuania’s preparations for its 2027 Presidency of the Council of the EU, which will take place during the first half of the year, as well as upcoming priorities and work in the field of health.
“As we prepare to take on the Presidency of the Council of the EU, we are already strengthening our dialogue with the European Commission and the European Parliament. It is important for us to engage in discussions on health issues at an early stage and ensure smooth cooperation throughout the Presidency,” says Minister of Health Linas Kukuraitis.
At the European Commission’s headquarters, Linas Kukuraitis and Daniel Naumovas met with European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi. The delegation later met with European Parliament Member Oliver Schenk, who serves as the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the Medical Devices Regulation and the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation.
On the second day of the visit, the Ministry of Health delegation began with a meeting with Lithuania’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU, Robertas Bružila. Later, Linas Kukuraitis and Daniel Naumovas discussed preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU with MEP Aurelijus Veryga, who serves as the European Parliament’s shadow rapporteur on the Biotech Act I Directive.
The delegation concluded its visit to Brussels with a meeting with Adam Jarubas, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Public Health, and the committee’s Vice-Chairs Romana Jerković, Tilly Metz and Stine Bosse. They also serve as the European Parliament’s shadow rapporteurs on the Biotech Act I Directive and the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
Preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU are an important process, enabling the country to make thorough preparations for the work ahead during the first half of 2027.
