Dr. Marija Jakubauskienė takes office as Minister of Health

Marija Jakubauskienė, Associate Professor, Doctor of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Vilnius University (VU), started her duties as Minister of Health on Thursday after taking the oath of office at the Parliament.

"The Government Programme sets out objectives and measures to effectively address the persistent problems of the health system - to reduce the queues for doctors, to address the shortage and uneven availability of doctors, to strengthen the mental health of the public, to increase the accessibility of medicines, and other measures. Solutions must be based not only on good intentions, but also on scientific evidence, expert opinion and existing good practice. Such decision-making will help us to create a modern and efficient health system that will provide quality and timely services to all citizens", says the new Minister Jakubauskienė.

Jakubauskienė graduated in public health from Vilnius University, where she obtained her PhD in biomedical sciences in 2007. She continued her studies at the VU Business School, where she obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration in 2019.

Jakubauskienė has been working as an academic at Vilnius University since 2001, serving as Vice-Dean of International Affairs and Programmes from 2008-2010, as Associate Professor of Education since 2013, and this year she was appointed Director of the Institute of Health Sciences at the Vilnius University Medical Faculty. In addition to her work at the University, she has held various positions as a health expert, specialist and consultant at UAB Health Economics Centre, Vilnius City Municipality and MTVC (Training, Research and Development Centre).
