Another team of medical professionals from Lithuania completed an internship in Ukraine
The medical team completed their internship in Ukraine and has now returned to Lithuania. They are from two of Lithuania’s largest hospitals in the capital: Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos and the Republican Vilnius University Hospital (RVUL). The knowledge and experience gained by the medical professionals will help strengthen the preparedness of Lithuania’s healthcare sector for potential future crises.
Having the opportunity to train under real wartime conditions supports the professional and personal growth of Lithuanian medical professionals, while also strengthening the preparedness and resilience of our entire healthcare sector in crisis situations. This year, several dozen Lithuanian medical professionals have already visited Ukraine and will be able to share their experience with their colleagues," says Skirmantas Krunkaitis, advisor to the Minister of Health.
Seven Lithuanian medical professionals participated in the two-week internship, during which they, together with Ukrainian medical staff, provided care to injured soldiers and civilians in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The participants witnessed firsthand the importance of the focus of both the medical community and society as a whole in the face of war.
"Fear is human, but having a plan gives the courage to act, even if improvisation is needed due to a lack of human or material resources, making coordination of efforts extremely important. Even when completely destroyed, it is possible to rise from the ashes like a phoenix," said Liucija Vaitkevičiūtė, an internal medicine physician at Hospital Santaros Klinikos.
Orthopedic trauma physician Raminta Martinaitytė from the Republican Vilnius University Hospital (RVUL), who participated in the internship, emphasized that even doctors need to take care of themselves when working under wartime conditions: “The key components of smooth work are good communication, improvisation, and time set aside for oneself. Let us not forget that, first and foremost, we are all human beings.”
Internships for Lithuanian medical professionals in Ukraine began to be organized this spring through cooperation between the Ministry of Health, the non-governmental organization Blue/Yellow, and healthcare institutions. Medical professionals from all regions of Lithuania can take part in these internships.
