Minister Marija Jakubauskienė graduated from Vilnius University with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Public Health and a PhD in biomedical sciences. Jakubauskienė also holds a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) and a Master's degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Studies from Vilnius University Business School.
She has more than 20 years of experience working with health system institutions, analyses and research. She has worked for the European Public Health Association for more than 10 years and is still the President of the Public Mental Health Section and a member of its International Scientific Committee. She has been a research expert for the European Commission.
Prior to assuming the post of Minister of Health, M. Jakubauskienė was Head of the Institute of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University, before which she worked at the Faculty as Associate Lecturer, and as Vice Dean for International Affairs and Programmes. She was an active participant and team leader in health innovation and deep tech incubation and acceleration programmes. She was voted the best lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine in 2023. M. Jakubauskienė was a member and Vice-Chair of the Central Academic Ethics Committee of Vilnius University for two terms.
Her research areas and interests include public health and epidemiology, public mental health, population health determinants and intervention research, health innovation, health services and health system research.
M. Jakubauskienė started her career as an assistant in the project “Institutional Strengthening of the Public Health Service in Lithuania” of the Dutch Government's “MATRA Pre-accession” programme, later she worked in the Health Division of the Department of Health and Social Security of Vilnius City Municipality as a chief specialist and as a health expert in the “Health Economics Centre”.
